Pick an eReader to Take on Your Vacation

Are you looking for a new eReader to take on your vacation? Out this summer is the third generation Kindle from Amazon, the new touchscreen Nook from Barnes & Noble and the new touchscreen Kobo eReader. All three devices have a 6-inch Pearl E Ink display, ideal for reading outside in bright light. Barnes & Noble’s new Nook is due in stores June 10th, but you can pre-order it now for $139. Border’s Kobo has dropped the price down below $100 (by 1 penny at $99.99), making it the cheapest eReader available. Amazon now offers the Kindle 3 at $114 if you don’t mind grayscale ads on your screen. PCWorld did a great comparison of the three devices to help you make your choice.

The biggest difference between devices is the user interface. Amazon’s Kindle uses 40 buttons to navigate around the screen and to type in searches and text notes. The other two, the Nook and the Kobo, are touchscreens, with a pop-up keyboard, leaving you with a smaller, lighter device. Storage capacity is still tops with the Kindle, with 3GB built in. The Nook has 2GB and Kobo only has 1GB. That being said, the Nook and the Kobo have microSD card slots, which can be expanded up to 32GB. Only the Kindle boasts of 3G connectivity, but all offer Wi-Fi.

All three devices offer free Smartphone apps. This is especially handy if you don't have your eReader with you and want to read while you wait somewhere. The question then comes down to which market offers the largest selection of books. With Borders falling into bankruptcy, the Kobo may not be the best choice. Barnes & Noble has a lot of ebooks for sale. But Amazon probably has the largest selection of ebooks, both for purchase and for free. Personally I have the Kindle, but second generation. I have loved being able to get free books as well as low priced books (99 cents to $2.99). As far as upgrading, I am holding out for the Amazon Kindle Android that is coming in the next year. It will most likely have a touchscreen and be a tablet device as well.
