Eight states plus Washington D.C. have hands-free cell phone laws. Another five states have laws restricting cell phone calling while driving. Hawaii doesn’t have a state-wide law, but each and every county has a hands-free law, so in essence, the whole state is hands-free. Nevada just passed a bill in the Senate requiring drivers use a hands-free device when using a cell phone and the bill is being passed to the Assembly for vote. It’s important to know the law in your state. Does your state have a hands-free law?

The hands-free laws differ from state to state. Oregon just passed a bill to toughen up their cell phone law. Apparently the state required using a hands-free device but had some exemptions if your call was work related. Some states, like California, have a law making it illegal for teens to use a cell phone while driving, even if they have a hands-free device. 16 states prohibit school bus drivers from using a cell phone completely, hands-free or not.

Do you use a Bluetooth headset while driving? In a poll questioning drivers in Philadelphia, (Newsworks.com), 50 percent of Philadelphia drivers use a Bluetooth headset, 25 percent say they hold the cell phone to their ear and hide it if passing a cop, and 12 ½ percent said they used their cell phone frequently while driving, and 12 ½ percent said they never use their cell phone while driving. We are doing a similar poll, and while it is only half over, our poll gave us these results: 21 percent used a hands-free device, 22 percent held the cell phone to their ear, and 53 percent never use a cell phone while driving.

Bluetooth headsets make using a cell phone more convenient. I have a large Droid X which makes it cumbersome to hold to my ear to talk. I use my Bluetooth headset almost 95 percent of the time.
