Hurricane Season is Coming... Are You Prepared?

 

The official Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1st through November 30th.
While that is still a little ways off, it never hurts to be prepared. According to the National Hurricane Center, there are several crucial items you will want to have ready and packed. They also have some great suggestions for additional supplies. NOAA suggests you have this kit packed and ready to grab in case of emergency:

DISASTER SUPPLY KIT (Not necessarily in order of importance)

Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days
Food - at least enough for 3 to 7 days
— non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
— foods for infants or the elderly
— snack foods
— non-electric can opener
— cooking tools / fuel
— paper plates / plastic utensils
Blankets / Pillows, etc.
Clothing - seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes
First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs
Special Items - for babies and the elderly
Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes
Flashlight / Batteries/ Spare Cell Phone Batteries
Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio
Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards - Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods
Keys
Toys, Books and Games (Remember there’s no TV or video games)
Important documents - in a waterproof container or watertight re-sealable plastic bag
— insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.
Tools - keep a set with you during the storm
Vehicle fuel tanks filled
Pet care items
— proper identification / immunization records / medications
— ample supply of food and water
— a carrier or cage
— muzzle and leash 

Power outages are pretty common during hurricanes. You should expect to be without electricity for a least a couple of days. Also keep in mind that your cordless phone will not work without electricity, however sometimes traditional “plugged in” telephones will work. It is also a great idea to have a spare battery for your cell phone as well as an emergency backup battery. A cell phone car charger is also a great idea. You can always go out to your car to plug in your phone and make a call.

Does your family have a written emergency plan?
This plan should have contact numbers, plans on how to meet up if separated, as well as a list of the closest shelters and hotels. Of course you probably have contact numbers in your cell phone, but if for some reason your phone battery is dead or the circuits are overloaded, you will need a good old fashion list.

When disaster strikes, stay calm.
