Google Buys PushLife to Start Music Store

Amazon.com has recently created its own Appstore, with 3,800 different apps available. This is an all out shot-over-the-bow at Apple. Now Google is apparently taking a shot at Apple as well. Google has purchased PushLife to take on the Apple iTunes market. PushLife is a company that allows you to sync your mobile phone with desktop software including iTunes and Windows Media Player applications.

Google isn’t ready to reveal any details. According to an article written by Katie Deatsch, Internet Retailer, “PushLife is available on BlackBerry, Android and some Nokia mobile devices, and comes with software that consumers download to their PCs.” Google is looking to create a service similar to iTunes for the Android platform. PushLife already has an app for Androids. Acquiring PushLife gives Google music syncing expertise.

“We are excited to welcome the PushLife team to Google,” a Google spokesperson says. “We believe the team has a wealth of experience building cool mobile applications, and we think they’ll make a great addition to our mobile team.”

“When we started our journey in 2008, we set out to build immersive mobile experiences for people to play, organize, share and purchase digital content across multiple devices,” PushLife writes in a statement on its web site. “But we think there’s a lot more work to do in the mobile space, like improving the way applications look and making them easier to use. And as Google is driving innovation on the mobile web across a wide variety of areas, we thought joining the company would be a perfect fit.”

Will Google build an online music store? My best guess is yes. It is the only way to compete with iTunes. It would let Android users purchase music from an Android music store and sync their phones with their computers to access the music they’ve purchased. I expect Amazon will be doing the same shortly since they have already built an Android App Store. Amazon has also already announced a free music storage and streaming service, getting a jump start on that market. This service allows users to store digital content (MP3, e-books and digital movies). It is compatible with most devices except the Apple products (iPod, iPad or iPhone). Naturally Apple and Amazon don’t play nicely together. Actually, Apple doesn’t play well with others for the most part.
