Google’s Buy-Out of Motorola Mobility Will Change the Tech Industry

Google’s $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility will significantly change our lives. How you ask? According to an article by Jason Hiner, ZDNet, there are 4 ways this acquision will impact the tech industry: the end of the patent wars, verticle integration, mobile consolidation, and the exponential growth of Google.

End of Patent Wars—Microsoft, Oracle, and Apple were tying Google up with litigations. With Motorola’s 17,000 patents, Google will now rule the Android Smartphone market, giving serious competition to its rivals, HTC and Samsung. Jason Hiner predicts there will still be some minor skirmishes, but the war is over.

Vertical Integration—Google is promising to keep Android an open ecosystem and run Motorola Mobility as a separate business. It’s also pretty clear that Google will build prototypes, concept hardware, and leading edge devices, to demonstrate its vision. Until they bought Motorola Mobility, Google didn’t have the hardware expertise or structure to really go into the hardware business. Now with its original 29,000 employees, and by adding Motorola Mobility’s 19,000 employees, which include those with hardware skills, Google is poised to become a hardware giant as well as a search engine giant.

Mobile Consolidation—With the expansion of mobile vendors, there are lots of choices for Smartphones and tablets. However, this year we have seen BlackBerry and Nokia lose market share, and Windows Phone 7 and WebOS are also in trouble. The market has been dominated by HTC, Samsung, and Motorola, however Motorola’s Q2 showed them struggling. Now that they will be part of Google, their future is looking up.

Growth of Google—Only a little more than a decade old as a company, Google has been an ideal company as an employer. Their offices are loosely organized and maintain a college campus style environment. They offer their employees free food, free transportation, and free personal services (cleaners, barbers, etc). Now with the addition of the 19,000 Motorola Mobility employees (who are much more structured), Google employees may see some changes coming down the pipe. In addition, since the search engine competition is growing, Google may have to expand more in other directions.

The bottom line is that Google’s 12.5 Billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility is a major event in the Tech Industry. It should have the competition shaking in their boots. And that can only be a good thing for consumers.

More than Just iPad—Top 10 Tablets to Watch in 2011

2011 is the year for the tablet. With iPad 2 sales in full swing, it is obvious that the tablet is here to stay. While no one can dispute Apple’s reign in the tablet market, there are some notable tablets to look out for this year. Here is ZDNet’s list of which ones they think are tops.

1. Apple iPad 2—Apple started the whole tablet market. The iPad 2 is thinner and lighter than the original and will probably be the top seller in 2011, significantly beating the other tablets in the market. It sports a 9.7 inch screen.
2. Motorola Xoom—this is the newest Android tablet and runs on the Android Honeycomb OS for tablets. Motorola and Verizon should be adding the free 4G upgrade soon. Wi-Fi only will be available soon. The XOOM has a 10.1-inch display.
3. HP TouchPad—is the first webOS-based tablet. The webOS platform is well designed for tablet screens, and HP will soon be adding a special wireless interaction with the upcoming Pre 3 Smartphone. It is expected to hit the marketplace by June.
4. HTC Flyer—HTC is the top manufacturer of Android phones. Its first tablet will have an HTC-optimized interface, and adds Scribe technology for handwriting and drawing onscreen. It will work with cloud-based Evernote for handwritten note-taking.
5. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1—the second version of their popular Tab. This model can be compared with the iPad for thinness and being light, and will ship with the Android Honeycomb OS. Samsung is making every effort to compete with the iPad is both form and price. From the name you can guess that it will have a 10.1 inch screen.
6. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9—similar to the other Galaxy tablets, but smaller. Obviously it has an 8.9 inch screen.
7. RIM Playbook—BlackBerry is about to release its new tablet. Running on its own QNX OS, it is designed for intuitive touch. It is a standalone device, but does have additional capabilities with some BlackBerry phones. The Playbook sports a 7 inch screen.
8. Sprint View 4G—made by HTC. It is similar to the HTC Flyer but runs on Sprint’s 4G WiMAXX speeds. It has a 7 inch screen.
9. Asus Eee Pad Transformer—Asus, most noted for its netbooks is now offering a unique tablet that will work with optional accessories such as a keyboard dock that turns it into a full Android notebook. The Eee Pad Transformer has a 10.1 inch screen.
10. LG G-Slate—released soon in the US on T-Mobile, the G-Slate is a mid-sized Android tablet with 3D camera. It has a strong set of features, and comes with an 8.9 inch screen.

Are you thinking of getting a tablet soon? Will you go with the iPad 2, a webOS or an Android? I am considering an Android, but am waiting to see which ones come out with the new Honeycomb OS. Another consideration is a case with a Bluetooth keyboard. I don’t like typing with touch screens. My son has an iPad and really didn’t like it all that well until he bought a case with a keyboard. Now he rarely uses his laptop.
